Norse myth referenced in closing

The last paragraph of the narrative portion of the book (before the closing poem) suggests that readers read “an interesting tale” if they have time. Based on the way the last sentence is structured, the tale he is referring to could be either Lord of the Rings or the myth of Andvari’s ring. I am going to focus on the latter.
